Guernsey Tingle Architects receives Design-Build Merit Award

Guernsey Tingle Architects was recently awarded the Design-Build Merit Award by the Design-Build Institute of America for its work on the Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center.

Guernsey Tingle Architects, Armada Hoffler Construction Company and the City of Virginia Beach partnered to address the health and overcrowding issues at the city's former animal shelter located on Leroy Road.

The city was under a mandate from the State Veterinarian's Office to implement an immediate action plan or get severe fines.

The team worked together to propose a viable design and construction solution providing a new home for the Department of Animal Control. The design was created to enhance the quality of life for the animals, volunteers and staff and to encourage animal adoption by residents of Virginia Beach and Hampton Roads.

Completed in December 2011, the Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center provides shelter for more than 350 animals. The building design includes energy-saving features and met the requirements for LEED certification.

The facility was designed with future growth in mind, with attention being paid to the expansion of animal housing and adoption.
